Leaving job with 3 month notice period

Unlikely for a 12 week notice period - much more likely for a 1 week or 1 month notice period. I have never had to give the full 3 months but have done so sometimes out of courtesy. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

I had a 4 month notice period in a previous role. I ended up working just under 2 months of it by negotiating an earlier finish date, but I had to really grovel. My new employer was ok with the 4 months, but were happy that I was able to start earlier - it was a new role that was created for me though, not an existing one to fill, which made a difference.
The same employer who allowed me to leave early has made other employees work their full notice (up to 6 months for some) & has also taken employees who refused to work it to court - so I consider myself very fortunate. My leaving early was conditional on certain work being completed (not all of which was under my control) so I did find it stressful, and my leaving date was only confirmed 4 days before I finished - not ideal.
The saving up of annual leave can be useful but your current employer is under no obligation to allow you to use it as part of your notice period (they can just pay you for it when you leave) so don't bank on that being possible.0 -
Wow a 3 month (or more) notice period seems crazy to me! I can understand up to a month or 6 weeks - to allow time to find a new job and do DBS checks if necessary. To me that seems very strange I'm used to an industry where contract lengths are a matter of months and you can be hired for a job and start the next day!
Is there a legal limit the notice period must be below? If not there should be!0 -
I've never seen anyone forced to server their three months either. Usually, it comes down to about 1 month and depending on the type of work and how commercially sensitive, you could find yourself out the door the same afternoon after having been relieved of your equipment and keys. No one wants to keep people around who dont want to be there and have 'left' already regardless of how desperate they are for the capacity.
I had to work every single day of my notice - I had a 3 month notice period and as an IFA I would normally be on garden leave. I wasn't put on garden leave and I had several stern talkings to because I wasn't 'pulling m weight' and working unpaid over time.
