Should I disclose having been sacked from a previous job?

Hi there!

I've just been invited to an interview, and I have to fill out a form going through any potential criminal activity in some detail, as well as potential black marks on my employment history - including the "Have you ever been dismissed from employment?" question.

I was sacked from a job eight years ago, and have since never needed to mention it on an application form as I only lasted for two months. For this reason, I am tempted to simply say "no" as I do not need to use this employer for references and as far as my general employment history on application forms goes, that role never existed. However, the thorough nature of this form worries me. Would they be likely to run a full background check on me and somehow find out about my entire employment history? If they found out after I took this job and THEN I was sacked...that really would make things a hell of a lot worse.

Thank you kindly!

I wouldn't mention it. As long as it's not on your CV and no one but you knows about this job then I'd be keeping quiet and never mention it ever again to anyone.

They cannot find out about your employment history.

I wouldn't mention it either, it was for 2 months so not worth bothering with it.
  • Cheers, this seems to be one of those rare occasions where people have said exactly what I wanted them to! I did think that the idea of a full employment history check was far fetched (especially given how long a DBS can take, and that only looks at your five year history), but nothing is impossible.

If they call you on it....

8 years ago, for 2 months? You genuinely completely forgot about this little blip in your employment history....really sorry...

Unless you were detained at HM pleasure or otherwise, some phyiscal evidence exists of this 2 months, I would never speak of it to anyone, ever.
