You can combine NHS dentistry with private dentistry

Dentist said I needed 6 fillings and one tooth was particularly bad and done on the NHS would be a band 3 treatment of £2hundredand something

Or privately £110 per tooth, totaling £660

I asked if I could have 1 tooth private and the rest on NHS band 2, he said yes, paid £160-170 :)

A band 3 NHS treatment involves providing either a crown or a denture - something made in a dental lab. So in your case I'm assuming you were told one tooth would need a crown? Just being a 'big' filling, or even a root filling + filling wouldn't tip a tooth over into band 3.

So - if it were one tooth needing crowning and 5 needing filling, then it would be £240ish on the NHS (In England)

If it were just 6 teeth needing filling (of any size) then it would all be included in the Band 2 £50 odd quid charge.

If you've paid £50 NHS fee for 5 fillings and £110-120 for a private crown - then you've had bargin on the century. A private crown would usually start at £250 and go up to double or even triple that depending on type and material
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
