New starter paperwork
Tsleleanor
I have been working for my current company since I was a kid, however I am due to start a new job on Monday. I am trying to complete the new starter paperwork but I am lost and don't want to have to ask them and look stupid, as the payroll woman doesn't come across as warm and cuddly.
Firstly they have given me a P46 form to complete - which I am fairly sure is not in use anymore, I thought it had changed in 2013 to the New Starter Check list?
Secondly within the P46 it asks for your present circumstances - where it asks
A is this your first job since April 2015
B I have had another job since April 2015 but this will be my only job.
C. I have another job.
Well as my old job and new job are both part time I have given my old job a months notice, but am starting with my new job before the end of this notice period. So I will have 2 weeks working in both job whilst I work out my notice.
I am unsure which category applies to me? I don't want to tick the wrong box and mess up my tax/ lie and get into trouble...what do I do here?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not an expert, and think this is really a question for the tax board. However, I can speak English. My understanding from what you have said (and this may be wrong) is that your new job is going to be your only job in two weeks time - is that right?
If that's correct, then I would tick B, as the statement is correct. I think HMRC will be able to sort it out from there. Worst case scenario - you underpay two weeks' tax and they'll catch up with you sometime next year - you could put two weeks' worth of tax aside from your new job against this possibility.Ex board guide. Hi, thanks for that, yes it is just a case of 2 week cross over.
Maybe Im just overthinking it, I just tend to worry about things like this. I sat on the phone to HMRC for 25 mins and couldnt get through, had a look through the web and this seemed like the best place to get a speedy reply.0 -
Although you're right, the P46 isn't in use any more, if you find the New Starter Checklist on the HMRC pages I think you'll find it asks the same questions.
Eventually, you'll get a P45 from your 'old' employer. Give that to the new employer (even if you've already given in a P46) and that should get the tax sorted.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I think you are right, mate, you are overthinking it.
It will all sort itself out.0
