My war on waste!!!

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion - I think I will get rid of the downstairs bins in each room, but the upstairs & bathroom, not sure.
Agree - having a clear system is what makes it work!''A moment's thinking is an hour in words.'' -Thomas Hood0 -
I just know if I removed the bathroom bin , the room would have loo roll insides languishing on every surface and empty bottles left on the side of the bath :cool:0

I've no bins. Spent ages thinking about a swing top bin, which colour etc, for the kitchen. Finally bought one, got it home and hated the colour - and realised it's too big. It's under the counter, with the lid inside the base and when I look at it I just sigh.
My waste isn't sufficient to warrant using a bin at all.... I have a carrier bag hanging on the kitchen door handle. Today's total landfill waste has been an empty crisp bag.0 -
Gosh - I wish I/we could get to the stage where we didn't need a bin!
I thought I was doing ok when I did our food shopping this morning: I selected loose fruit and veg where I could and didn't put it in any extra bags. I also tried to minimise packaging on other stuff I bought. But then I went to B**ts to drop off a prescription and automatically picked up the freebie magazineWhat was that all about? It must have taken me 10 minutes to flick through it and then it went into the recycling: must do better.
Look at the contents of my bin reveals an awful lot of tea-light casings (or whatever they're called). I love having tea-lights alight most evenings, but I guess they are pretty wasteful: all suggestions for alternatives gratefully received.0 -
7WW - now you'll find the next time that you are faced with a free mag you probably will not bother with it. I used to subscribe through T***o vouchers to HB mag but they always sent so much extra advertising that had to be recycled I got fed up with having to deal with it. Not to mention the plastic bag it was posted in.

Lovely to see you posting again 7WW
I almost forgot to say hi Fuddle . It's good to be back, I've done my best to read along for the last wee while, but never seemed to have time to post. One of the small positive things about having finally sorted out all my mum's affairs is that I seem to have a bit more time for myself.
I'm hoping that this year will finally be the year we get ourselves sorted and really start doing more to reduce our ecological footprint. I'm also hoping I'll make time to keep posting even after I head back to work on Tuesday!
And you're right Fiftys1: I nearby pledge that all free by magazines will stay safely in the shops from now on.
Have a good evening everyone.0 -

hmm - make your own by grating larger candles, melting them and using the wicks for the little ones? you could recycle the little casings then ad-infinitum.0 -
We went to the cinema this afternoon as DH wanted to see the new Star Wars film.Nearly everyone who came into the cinema was clutching a large soft drink and either popcorn or hot dogs. After the film all the paper cups etc were left behind!
Does anyone know if cinemas and fast food outlets recycle their waste?0 -
Good Evening All,
We are doing well, we have nothing in the bin so far all non recyclible food packaging has been going in the wood burner.

I don't know if they do Thirza - but I do have a problem with people who can't spend 2/3 hours without stuffing their faces with overpriced junk! I also hate the smell of the food wafting about!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0
