:) I just give my spuds a quick scrub then steam them in their skins and eat the whole lot. Saves time and nutrients, too.

I don't compost any potato bits which have to be cut of the spuds due to damage, as I don't want to concentrate this kind of material in the soil as possible disease risk. It's typically only a tiny divot anyway, and goes into the landfill bin.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

  • When the new rules came into our area about the bin men not collecting over loaded bins and extra bags, if we had extra bags then we drove it to the council tip and it does make you more aware about waste.
I normally chuck all potato waste into the compost at the allotment but I will check the potatoes next time as I don't want disease in the bin.
Hopefully we will get chickens this year so most scraps will go to them. We will convert the wooden playhouse into a chicken coop and run will be made up mostly of pallets and chicken wire :)

What usually do with my veg waste is, dig a trench, place the waste in then back fill. After a few months I plant on top. An old dear on my allotment site told me to do it. It saves composting.

I knew someone in Swaziland who had a fantastic veg garden. She would bury corn cobs in rows, then between the rows she'd plant her seeds. The following year the rows which had the corn cobs would be planted with seeds, and the cobs would go between them in the place where the veg had grown the year before.

I think the idea of burying the veg waste is a good one. I might give that a go. We've got a dalek compost bin and it's taking ages to fill up! Burying it all might be a better idea.

Did anyone watch Huge Fernley- Whatshisface, make a soup out of potato peelings on the Sunday Brunch, 27th?
No waste there, and everyone tasting said it was delish! One to try I think :)

I made it the day I saw it as was doing extra roasties for the leftovers. We ate it for lunch the next day. I have to say it went down very well with adults and kiddlers. I'll be making it again very soon.

You are right Goldie Girl it does take a shift to make things happen. I do think the government and people already in the media such as Hugh F W can help influence behaviour. I feel the government are missing a huge opportunity in the way that they deal with waste. Money could be saved if the onus was switched to the original producers of unnecessary packaging to pay for disposal. Resources are used to produce a heap of carp that has to be disposed of either in to landfill, incinerated or shipped around the world where it 'may' be recycled.
The film 'Trashed' narrated by the actor Jeremy Irons is previewed on you tube but needs to be released on TV to bring home the effect waste is having in various situations around the world. Another media person who cares.

What else could make a difference if a 5p bag charge has such an effect on behaviour?!

I am pleased to say that despite the festivities and my household increasing from 2 to 5 for several days my landfill bin only had a couple of extra small bags in it over Christmas. If people thought about using either recyclable or reusable wrapping for gifts it would have been even less. I am planning to pluck up the courage to request this (or even no gift) early before next December.

Hello, I'm going to make a determined effort to de-lurk and post more so here goes:

I'm another one who's going to give peelings soup a go in the next couple of days. I've also got some carrot and sweet potato peelings: I'm not sure whether to add them to the soup or to put them in with the chicken bones when I'm making stock. What do people think?

    Hi 7weekwonder...

I've tried to save time in the past and combined veg with chicken bones. Unfortunately, the bones are a bit of a nightmare scooping them out as they get tangled in the veg! I would make the stock first. Easier to strain. ;)

Let us know how the mixed peeling soup turns out! :)

i am a happy bunny, my landfill bin was emptied 8 days ago and my first bag will go in tomorrow, no bad considering we have 6 kids who are all grown up and were here more than once over xmas. The recycling bins are full though, but we forgot to put them out as the recycle lorry came on a different day.

    regards
