My war on waste!!!

update on my war on waste--do not accept receipts at checkout-unless have used my debit card
Refusing receipts saves only modest amounts of paper, but it's worth noting that receipts commonly contain BPA - an environmentally dubious chemical which is used in the thin, glossy, thermal type paper. Any receipt you hold against a hot lightbulb (try a 60w bulb for a few seconds) that turns black contains BPA as a thermal ink.0 -
I hate supermarkets. I love the idea - the reality is different. I used to be able to go in and find interesting things to buy. They've been upmarketed and gentrified and now they are full of things that I've never had, don't want, couldn't use .... leaving me struggling, most of the time, to actually find "something simple and cheap for tea"
As for a list - forget it. I can never go into any shop with a list and come out with what's on the list. They're always out of stock. Whether I'm in Mr Ts or Morries looking for tins of my favourite soft drink, or in Liddies for eggs, chips and a pack of frozen peas.
A lot of the time these days I even struggle to find something as simple as instant custard or suet! I mean, they're the basics of my cupboard!0 -
My local coop only prints receipts if you ask for one which is good as I only take them when I have paid with card. Only bought one carrier bag since charge introduced - bought books on very wet day and forgotten bag I usually carry.2025 Decluttering Campaign 691/2025 🏅🏅🏅🏅(🏅🏅) 🌟🌟

Made a decent bar of soap from recycled odds and ends of soap bars.I keep them in a jam jar in the cupboard under my sink and when the jar is full i break them up into small pieces and a tiny bit of water and a quick blast in the microwave and the soap is mushy enough to pour into the bottom half of an old soap dish which I use as a mold.I then put it in the airing cupboard for several days to dry out and voila I have a rectangular bar of soap which I cut in half and use a half at a time in my wash-hand basin in the bathroom. My DD when she is flitting around the world gives me the hotel bathroom soaps that have barely been used (they get binned anyway once opened ) so I have a collection of those as well to recycle I usually save until I have enough of the same colour so my recycled soap bar is all one colour.
I just hate to see things go to waste:):)

I always take receipts when I buy something as I like to account for every penny I spend.
Well I did until JuneMy aunt died then and I spent so long sorting out her house that my accounts got left, plus the fact that I was putting things from her house which I was keeping near my desk so couldn't access it. The pile of receipts has got so big that I keep putting it off and that makes it worse! I really, really must tackle that mountain and get back on track as I feel that I've not been as careful with the spending over the past few months as I should have been.

I would hesitate to decline a receipt......in our local shop receipts are not given to youngsters as allegedly they throw them around, but I am aware of at least 2 instances where a teenager was accused of theft....so receipts are always requested.
In Italy you must be given a receipt for any item purchased, both you and store ownercan be fined.....an effort to minimise tax evasion.

I always take receipts and keep the grocery ones to manage my accounts and others in case there is a problem with the product. And, of course, for proof that I have just purchased whatever it is. Without it, you could be on a sticky-wicket if accused of theft.
My stance on receipts is this; I doubt a year's worth of my receipts is equal to one newspaper or one magazine. Of which I buy neither. I shred receipts once finished with them and the shreddings go in the recycling bins here.
Otherwise, I continue to reduce my waste in whatever ways I can.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

My 2 local Co-ops have a history of over-charging especially on reduced items so I would always take a receipt.0 -
Yes, I'd always want a receipt as well - to protect myself as it's a confirmation that I've paid, to confirm that I've paid the right amount (I was overcharged by £10 in Sainsbury's recently, and I needed the receipt to get a refund) and also so that I can include anything in my spending diary.Early retired - 18th December 2014
