Would it have been The Dairy Book of Home Cookery, possibly? It was published by the Milk Marketing Board in 1968 although there have been many editions. The one I'm familar with would have been late seventies, I think.
Cream background hardback, about an inch thick? If so, they're widely available secondhand. There is a sister volume, The Dairy Book of Home Management, too. I think you bought them from the milkman.

Looks like the 1968 edition is a collectable now. Think the one I'm familar with was the 1978 edition.
Ohh thanks for this GQ I have my late Mum's revised version. I don't think it's the original and I would say this went into print maybe the late 1970's or early 1980's - still a fab book though and some of the recipes in it have been updated.
Whatever happened to the Milk Marketing Board?Wasn't that also the policy with Body Shop when they opened many moons ago?
Yes they still do Justamum- I still take my used Bodyshop tubs and pots back to them. Lush also do it as well, but I went through a phase with the Lush pots of washing them out well and storing the spare buttons in them!

I used to buy quite a bit from Bodyshop, but since having children I stopped - I found them horrendously expensive. Pampering myself came bottom of my list of prioritiesI also wasn't too happy when she sold out to L'Oreal who test on animals when she was so against it herself. Our Body Shop closed down recently but I noticed a sign in their old shop which said that someone is selling as an agent (I suppose a bit like an Avon one).
My daughter recently bought some things from Lush (prices :eek: but she is a single young woman and working so she can spoil herself) and she's very happy with them. I do hope she doesn't go mad with buying it though as I don't think there would be enough room in the fridge to keep it all0 -

<< I've recently started getting veg delivered from a local market gardener, they deliver the veg in a mushroom box, which you exchange each week - no packaging, just really amazing quality and variety and although it is more expensive than say Aldo, I do save money, as I base my meals around the box, and waste nothing.
Islandmaid, many moons ago when my late Ma-in-law was alive in Northwood ,just up the road from you she would get us all up around 4.00 a.m. to go 'mushrooming. We drove to a field which she said had the best ones in, and there we were, myself,OH and two small children wandering round in semi darkness with a torch and very damp feet searching out the elusive mushrooms. As the sun cam up,so did the mushrooms and we swiftly picked some for breakfast. My eldest DD aged about 7 then whispered 'Why can't Nanny go to Sainsburys like you do Mummy?'
I whispered back 'No Sainsbury's on the Isle of Wight honey '
"Oh,I see, then where do we put the money for them" she replied. She always was a very honest little girl:):)
My Ma-in-law was very protective of the site and would never tell her sister who also lived on the IoW where it was .They argued about this for years as her sister said she should tell her, and Ma-in-law said "No ,if Mum (their Mum) wanted you to know she would have told you, and anyway you can afford to go and buy them.
My Ma-in-law could also afford to go and buy them but she was brought up to forage and she always said leave some for another day:):) We would go back to her house and have bacon, eggs for her chickens and fresh picked mushrooms .They had a taste of their own.In all the years returning there on holiday I can never remember now where that blessed field was.Its location died along with my lovely frugal ma-in-law in 1986

JackieO - how lovely X. I don,t blame her for not sharing the site, commercial pickers would be up ther in their droves now
I would love to go mushrooming, but too scared I would pick the wrong type and make someone poorly or worse
We are lucky though, we regularly get 'free food' from fish to freshly shot game, the odd rabbit as well as wild garlic, sloes etc even sweet chestnuts and cobnutsNote to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

We used to buy blewits and another type which we called 'cocky lads' - for reasons you'll probably grasp.
I've just googled' mushrooms cocky lads' in the hope I could post a photo but Boy! Oh! Boy! I got more than I bargained for.
I quickly backed out and came scurrying back here. :rotfl:
I just hope my OH doesn't check my recent history.
Now that would take some explaining.0 -
I wish some enterprising person would open up the 'Weigh and Save' shops again. They fit perfectly with my pre-cycling mission. Take your own containers, weight out the amount you want, pay and HEY PRESTO!

I used to avoid these becuase I didn't like the thought that somebody else might have stuck a mucky hand in something that I'd later come along and buy.
I've seen too many people come out of toilets without washing their hands.0 -
I still have the original Dairy Book of Cookery - it is my absolute favourite cookery book and I think children will fight over it when I go. We married in early 1970 and I think I got it from my milkman then. It is in awful condition embedded with 45 years of spilt cake ingredients in places but used all the time although I have to refer to my handy conversion tables for oven temperatures. Hubby looked at price of replacing it on t'internet and decided the cost was daft.2025 Decluttering Campaign 648/2025 🏅🏅🏅🏅(🏅🏅) 🌟🌟
