apprenticeship traineeship for a 30 year old

Hello all,

I'm looking for some kind of traineeship / apprenticeship scheme. However I am struggling to find anything at the moment.

I am currently in the finance industry but I am looking to change career and income prospects, long term. The issue I have is that it appears many schemes are closed off to people of my age. If I do find something I can afford to work at £3.50 per hour etc.

In terms of sector I am quite open minded, I just need a change.

I am looking for Traineeships / apprenticeships which offer:

a minimum salary of 10k a year

a professional qualification/training

preferably in South Wales training

something possibly in IT ( but I am quite open minded)

a start date relatively soon

If anyone has any ideas what I can do or where I can look at please post or PM

So far I noted Logica CMG (IT Company) was offering something quite appealing and I also noted that the not going to uni website appeared to be useful

Kind Regards

Aren't those for younger people only (16-24)?

Apprenticeships in England and Wales are for anyone over 16. although pay rates are higher for older apprentices so employers may be keener to take on younger people and pay them less while they are training.

What qualifications do you have? Some apprenticeships are available to older people but it would usually need to be at a level higher than you have already studied.

Apprenticeships for over 24's are also not funded, but you can take out an advanced learning loan which works similar to a student loan.
  • I do hold a IT degree. but due to a family bereavement it didnt work out as a career and knocked me off my tracks a bit.

If you hold an IT degree you obviously have an aptitude and should set your sights a bit higher.

Have you considered getting yourself an MCP/MCSE or one of the more specific certifications like CCNA?

Or bring yourself up to date with an Open University postgrad course - for example http://www.open.ac.uk/postgraduate/qualifications/k22

I'd echo above, though personally I wouldn't bother with an OU course. Do the certification route, look for contract work to get you experience - PC migrations should be easy enough to get for instance.

Then either continue the contract route or keep applying for any low level IT jobs that come in.

This isn't completely accurate; in some sectors, 19+ are funded but require an employer contribution. However in this particular case, there would be zero funding as the OP holds a degree.
