Anyone lived in a commune/community?

Hi all,
I hope this is in the right place.
I'm in the early stages of planning a community living project and was wondering if anyone had lived in a similar community or commune (without the stereotypes this word conjures up!) and would be happy to share advice or information or even their experiences with me.
The plan is to rent/buy some land and live in temporary static caravan housing for the first few years, generate our own power and grow our own food and generally be as self sufficient as possible. I currently have 3 other families interested in joining and am aiming for 7. The aim is to be ready to move in 3 to 5 years as I need to finish university first.
I'd be grateful for any info. Thanks in advance.

If you 'Google' there are many sites on the pros and cons of living in a commune.
If you want actual experiences, 'without the stereotypes this word(commune) conjures up!' then the first two mandatory conditions should be no drugs and someone in every family must get a paid job.;)0
