LG Solar Panels v Solarworld

Just after some advice on which way to go with the following for a south facing roof (30 degree pitch)

14 x LG Neon 2 (black) 300w or....

15 x Solar world Sunmodule Plus 250w

In both instances it would be a Solar world Sunplug string inverter.
Marginal cost between the two, with LG being the more expensive.
Any pointers or recommendations appreciated!

Thanks.

I'd say IF there's only the choice between the 2 then it has to be the solarworld 250's, purely because if you go with the LG's then 14 x 300kWp is 4200kWp which will take you over the 4kWp FiT threshold and into the lower 4-10kWp FiT rate.

If the max you can get up there is 15 panels then try to get a quote for 14 x 285kWp panels, there's a few to choose from and they won't increase the price(off the top of my head there's the seraphim 285). At least with these you'll install 3.99kWp and get the max return from your roof.

Edit, LG also do a 285kWp panel

Ok, how much is a "marginal" cost difference. Care to post your full quote?

  • Inclusive of everything, the LGs come in at 6400 with the Solarworlds a couple of hundred less. Having done some "googling" they are both very reputable and reliable panels, but the Solars are made in house, but I also noticed last year there was talk of them having financial issues but I can't see anything of recent.

The degradation on both is similar but the manufacturers speal indicates a modular efficiency on the LG as 18.3 and on the Solars 14.9, which seems fairly negligible to me. I can't see much between the two panels, hence my post, I'm wondering if there was something I was missing!

That's too much I think. I had a quote for 14x BenQ 285W panels a while ago for under £5000. For other roof-related reasons we couldn't go ahead with it. But these days 285W panels aren't anything particularly special so you should hardly have to pay a premium.

Unless both manufacturers have actually been making the things for 10+ years and set up a monitored installation at the start, then any figures for degradation will be pure guesswork.

The efficiency rating probably refers to how much power is generated per unit area and again is pretty academic - they've declared the power output of the panels and you know how many of them you can fit up there. Any 'increased efficiency' will simply mean that your panels will be a bit smaller - but if you've no plans to do anything with the 'leftover roof space' then it won't be any advantage.

I would like to muscle in before the Feed in Tariff is reduced at the end of this year. I need to move quick so does anyone know where I can buy Solar Panels and the mounting equipment?? need to move on this fast. A friend of mine suggested solarandheatstore.com does anyone else have any other ideas?
If you buy your own panels and mounting equipment, you won't qualify for FIT payments !

Unless of course you are an MCS registered fitter (in which case you ought to know the best suppliers already).

  • Have you checked the Solarworld Youtube Video showing there build quality? I just had 16 fitted and they look really smart...
