Keeping bedsheets on, and making towels fresh

I got a new bathtowl for Christmas last year and was fine till about 2 months ago as in it smells a little clammy/damp after a few days

Second thing is my bedsheets, I have a double bed and the covers come off most nights as I toss and turn, I managed to cut this down to only now and again by putting safety pins in the corners but this has the effect of tearing the sheets where they are held.

I suppose I have a third issue is that the bed sheets are blackening mostly in the middle where I lie is there a way to get rid of the discolouring?

:) Re the blackening of the sheets, are you wearing pajamas which are a middling-to-dark colour? I've known dye transfer from jammies to bedsheets, esp when the jammies are relatively new.

I suspect with the towel, and that it's just happening in the past two months, that it's a case of a thick new towel not being able to dry out properly after use due to the coolness of the bathroom. Possible to up the heat/ take the towel out and put it somewhere else to dry out for a few hours after use?

I did think maybe it was dryness as I used to hang the towel over the door to dry most of the time then move it to (switched off) radiator when it was dry so its just as I thought thanks.

Bedsheets no I sleep in just underwear though I can get quite clammy so thats why I sleep that way and never have heating on in there unless its freezing and always off a few hours before bedtime. and the majority of the discolouring is in the middle where my back would be and im the most sweaty.
  • We have the same problem with one set of sheets, its almost like there isnt enough elastic in the corners to hold it. Sometimes better quality sheets seem to fit better but not sure what you can do, maybe someone else has a clever idea.

If you dont mind me asking, how often do you wash your sheets? Do you put them in a really good hot wash (60 degrees plus?). My DS uses a lot of hair products and I have to make sure his pillowcases get washed once a week with a good dollop of bio powder in a hot wash or they start to get marked. Same with the sheets I guess, we all get a bit hot and sweaty at night!

    Launder towel more frequently?

    Bath before bedtime, sleep naked?
Just sheets or do you have duvet cover?
  • Can't help with the sheet problem. The towel may need washing at a higher temperature i.e. 60 degrees. Might be worth a try also make sure the towel is really well dried.

Son is a Thrasher in his bedclothes - I hold the duvet into it's cover with hair elastics as letting him sleep near pointy things does not seem sensible. Might spare ripping holes?

This may seem counterintuitive, but you may actually sweat less at night if you wear cotton, for instance a long T-shirt.

Do you have a cotton molton underneath the sheet? And is the sheet cotton, or polycotton?

The sweating may even be caused by something else, for instance, I sweat terribly if the curtains are closed, and they are polyester.

Maybe they all need washing more often!!

Blackening sheets is a build up of dirt dead skin and sweat.. You are showering (if you're not that won't help the situation!) then sleeping in your own dirt.. That cannot be nice!

Wash the sheets super hot to get rid of what you can (dishwasher tablet is best for such grossness) and get the towel in there too!

If the sheets are torn .. Mend them or replace them.. I've had fabulous ones from the charity shop.. Boil wash to get rid of other people's cooties and jobs a good'un !!

You can get elastic straps with crocodile clips (like on braces) which go under the mattress and clip to the sheets and hold them in place! I'm like an egg whisk in bed and have never untucked my fitted sheet.. Oh.. I do find the 'correct' size sheets too small as I have a deep mattress so I get a size bigger.. Eg.. Double bed but kingside bedding.. Never failed me!!
