Carpet disaster - need help

I desperately need help with a carpet disaster.

I have a cream carpet which unfortunately suffered a red wine stain last weekend. Before I became aware of the spill one of my guests had sprayed vanish foam on the carpet which did remove a small amount of the stain. The next day I tackled it with my vax machine again it took a bit out but not all.

I ordered a product called wine away on line however getting impatient I took some advice from a friend last night and followed a you tube video which suggested a bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and water paste.
Disaster - not only did it not work but I think it has actually lifted the colour out of the carpet. Rather than a contained red stain I now have a massive muddy yellowish stain (rather like a dog has peed on it).

I'm now terrified I've ruined it completely and really don't know what to do. I stupidly thought as bicarbonate, vinegar and water were natural products they wouldn't do any harm. All the comments on line were saying how this worked for them on old stains etc so clearly I went badly wrong somewhere.

I'm going to look for specialist cleaners as the carpet is only 2 years old, in a room which is rarely used but in a spot where furniture or a rug couldn't be used to cover it. Any suggestions in the meantime would be much appreciated.

Thanks

would your contents insurance cover this? I know one of my relations claimed for her iron falling on carpet and leaving large burn.

I'd be reluctant to claim although we do have accidental damage. I've never claimed in 26 years and still have a ridiculously high premium so think a claim would just increase it.

I've made contact with a specialist carpet cleaning firm who are coming out next week. I decided the sensible thing was to leave it alone and get professional help in case I'm now adding to the problem. Fingers crossed they are miracle workers!

The only thing I would use on a red wine stain is white wine. you apply it as soon as you can after the spill - BUT - I have seen it take out dry stains completely.
sorry this has happened hunny - I do hope the cleaners can take the stain out. and you will know next time if red wine gets spilled - slosh white wine over it and sponge it up. the white wine mixes with the red and as you put more white wine on it so the 'stain' lifts. then its easy enough to get the white wine out with a little carpet shampoo (or people shampoo even).

No it was clear white vinegar but you would never know it looking at the stain:o

I had a deep red carpet in my hall for 13 years which I absolutely hated but there was nothing wrong with it and I was too mean to change it. It was virtually indestructible despite a very determined Jack Russell it survived unscathed - how irritating!

That's how insurance companies gain. People are scared to claim in case their premium goes up. If it does go up slightly, I doubt it will go up as much as replacing the carpet would cost, so if the stain doesn't come up, think about claiming. That's what you pay for. And remember to shop around when the renewal is due. :)

Mine has been bleached and all sorts and still won't die !! Lol

Get an insurance claim in! They will send professional cleaners out to assess it first .. But definitely the point of insurance!! We had a £7000 claim and our premium stated the same! We had a fire in The kitchen

  • Since you have tried some things on the carpet, my suggestion is that you just leave it like that. Let the professional carpet cleaners handle it. You should make arrangements with them as soon as possible. And try not to wet the carpet on that stained part. I'm sure the professional cleaners will have the solution for your problem. I too had almost the same situation like this, instead of wine I spelled cappuccino. I didn't do anything when I noticed the stain, I just hired professional cleaners to do the job.

I spilled red wine on a pale green carpet in a rented house and got it out using glycerin from the chemist. Rub in, leave overnight and then dab with a damp cloth. You may as well try it. What have you got to lose!!
