Fixed term contract rights

I'm currently on a fixed term maternity contract. When I applied for the job it was informally discussed that the position may become a part time job share as the employee I'm covering for is likely to want to come back part time. I want to start a family of my own ideally going on my own maternity cover when she comes back to work (if she chooses to). If the job was to become a job share would I automatically be offered the position? And if so could my employer choose not to offer it to me if I was pregnant myself? Would this be classed as unfair dismissal, or not if the role became part time so essentially changed? Thanks.

They don't have to offer you the job share/ permanent role. Your role is fixed term, any position after that would be at the discretion of the employer.

There are many if's and buts here so I would suggest you don't bother trying to second guess what is going to happen until you know when you are pregnant.

But, if they decide not to job share then there is no job for you
If they decide to job share and they feel you are not good enough then they do not have to offer you the job, pregnant or not
If they decide to job share and you are not pregnant but think you are good enough then they can still refuse to give the job to you.
If they decide to job share and you are pregnant but think you are good enough then not giving you the job due to being pregnant would be discriminatory and then you would have to decide whether making a claim is worth the hassle.

So as I said....don't worry about it until you a) know its a job share and b) know you are pregnant.

In my work a temporary post which becomes permanent (eg maternity cover and the original worked resigns rather than returning) is always readvertised and interviewed for.
