Best tax return software

Hi,

Just about to do our tax returns.
Are they any recommendations for inexpensive and or easy software?

I'm considering TaxCalc and gosimpletax the later being an on-line solution rather than software download.

  • I use FreeAgent to do mine these days (as it does my company books too) but I used to just use the HMRC online software without any problems (and still do for my wife's tax return). My needs are relatively simple though...some employment income (company director), dividends and not much else.

My wife is a basic rate taxpayer, she is about to inherit less than £10k. Does she need to declare this money as income (normally fills out a self assessment)/is she liable to pay tax on it?

You should probably start your own thread instead of hijacking somebody else.

Taxcalc is great in my view. The only one to avoid is HMRC which is very weak, PLUS you have the additional risk that if you forget to save a return submission elsewhere and then the database snarls it up - which happens all too often - when the fines come you have no evidence that you submitted on time.

To list all the issues I have with the HMRC software would hijack this thread even more than it already has been!

  • Well, when I submit a standard inland revenue on line SA form I get back an email giving me the date and time of submission and confirming it was "successfully received"

Seems pretty good evidence to me!
