The OFT no longer exists, and their Debt Collection Guidance when it did exist never quite said that.

Current regulation is with the FCA, and whet they say is here under the "Debt collection visits" section

I would not worry too much about there doorstep collector chappy calling on you, it's quite rare, and they are just self employed collectors, not bailiffs.

Even if they did call on you, they have no more power than next doors cat, so you can tell them to go away, or you can ignore them completely.

You should write and ask for proof of the debt, and tell them you will only communicate with them in writing.

    Just as an aside here:

(I am not au fait with the "rights" debt collectors have to "visit" whether or not they need permission etc) - BUT - if you are receiving letters such as the above, there is a very good chance that they constitute "threatening language" (which includes writing things down).

Basically the letter is threatening you that if you do not do something (contact them) they will then "Visit" you (this could actually say anything from visiting to Morris dancing in your front garden) but, it is implying (threatening) that unless you do something then they will.

    That is an offence.

They would be within the law to write to you and ask you to communicate with them.

They would be within the law to write and say "We ARE INTENDING to visit you" because that is a statement as opposed to a threat.

I would point out to them what the law is in regards to threatening behaviour; this does not have to be a threat to your person, or of a criminal act or whatever, but, clearly the reference here that there will be a "consequence" if you do not contact them (the visit) cannot be construed as anything other than a "threat". If you have it in writing even better because they cannot backtrack on what's down on paper.

You have already been in contact with them. Why not discuss whatever subject they want to raise with you then the matter of the visit becomes a non issue.

Refrain from reciting legislation to them, a simple letter (or email) stating that you will only deal with them in writing, and if said doorstep collector was to call, he/she, will be ignored, should suffice.
