cheapest supermarket salmon?

i bought a bag of 5 salmon fillets for £2.99 from sainsburys - but they were quite small compared to the fresh ones from tesco.

can anyone recommend a cheap source of salmon? - if it's fresh it needs to be freezable.

the nearest street market is a bus ride and i think their salmon has already been frozen

tia.

Sorry I don't like salmon so I can't help you out on this one.

Do you need to have salmon, could you not work with something cheaper or more cost effective?
  • I buy a whole salmon from Tescos when it is on offer last time it was about £5.75 per kilo. The last one cost me about £7.00. I got the guy to cut it into steaks (although its maybe fillets you're after) - I ended up with about 9 steaks and 2 fillets and when I got home I transferred the whole lot into individual freezer bags. (The good thing about getting them to do the cutting up instore is that they can bin the head, tail and fins without me ever having to even look at them!!)

I agree with woofwoofwoof (:)) and the whole salmon at Tesco do seem to work out the cheapest, it's definitely a lot cheaper than buying the fillets. They also seem to be on special offer a lot at the moment, and they're often really cheap at Christmas-time, if you fancy stocking up lol.

The problem with cheap salmon is that it's been farmed i.e. pink because of the dye in its food, very fatty because it can't swim as it would in the wild and a damage to the marine environment where it's farmed.

I'm guessing that the £2.99 bag of salmon you bought is Young's Wild Salmon 5pk. This is *wild* salmon which has none of the problems above. This represents excellent value for money because it's an infinitely superior product to the farmed salmon you'll get in most other places. The only downside of the Youngs salmon is the food miles involved in shipping it from Alaska.

You will be able to buy cheaper salmon but I doubt that you will find better value salmon that the Youngs bag for £2.99.

    thank you for your suggestions

woofwoofwoof + gingernutmeg - i hadn't considered the value of buying a whole salmon. they have them at the larger sainsburys - i'll look next time.

unfortunately the tescos near here are the smaller metro or express ones. they don't have a fresh fish counter - only a packaged section

krispy - any suggestions for other similar fish are welcome. its getting a balance of dietary needs and cost. with fishy fish the littlie only likes cod and haddock - cod is very expensive at the moment. we aren't eating red meat - so it's chicken or fish.

adsk - it is the youngs bag of wild salmon - i'll keep your advice in mind

i only buy wild salmon because of the massive amounts of anti-biobics pumped into farm salmon.
i havent seen the frozen wild salmon but will have a look at that, it sounds quite a good value buy. thanks

  • all hours I don't know where you live, but you could always take a very cheap camping holiday and try catching your own. I'm told it's very relaxing. I don't know about that, but I do know that there is nothing to beat fresh caught scottish salmon.

if the kids only like haddock nad cod, try them with hoki or pollack. ( pollack usually comes in value bags) Farmfoods, if you have one has a lot of cheap frozen fish and had quite a bit of Hoki. I do like hoki, more than cod, I wish chippies would start selling it! Real meaty flakes.

the reason cod is expensive is cos theres hardly any left! Pollack however, is plentiful ( for now) and way way way cheaper. Ive turnedthis into fish pies, and fish goujons ( flour/egg/breadcrumbs) and its been perfectly acceptable, and not much difference to haddock at all.

cant help with the salmon tho- I only like white fish myself.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • Haddock always seems to represent good value, I got a nice cut of it, 350g for £2.40something

haven't come across the salmon you bought...it strikes me as very good value.

Pollack is certainly worth buying, it is very like haddock...I have never seen it for sale in Ireland. Poaches very well and is very tasty with a Marie Rose or similar sauce.

I won't buy cod nowadays because of its dwindling supply

Mackerel is very nice, must be extremely fresh...I never had any problem getting my children to eat it.

Plaice and whiting are two types of fish which are bland enough in flavour for children...if you make fingers with them at home nobody will ask what type of fish it is!

    Sorry for waffle...
