i've been trying to find out if these are these part of the same company? i found a page saying egg uses hsbc as a clearing bank for payments.
could egg access funds in a hsbc bank account without you agreeing to it?

No, egg is not part of HSBC Group. They trade as egg banking plc, which i think is a seperate company. Since its an online bank they can use any bank for clearing, in this case HSBC.
I don't think anyone can access your funds, without your permission or their notification.
