Help Needed - Demoted During Probationary Period

Five months ago I took on a promotion at work to be a manager and was given a six months probationary period.

A month or so ago, my Regional Manager visited me at the office and suggested to me that I take a demotion to Supervisor and that they would get somebody else in as manager to mentor me. At the time, I agreed to it as I felt under pressure to make an instant decision. There was no prior warning of a meeting, no witnesses and nothing put in writing on either side. He told me to leave it with him and he would keep me updated.

I came back from my holiday a couple of weeks later to a text from a friend of mine who used to work for the company asking why my job was being advertised on the internet! I had not (and still haven't) been informed by the company that the changes had been agreed and am extremely unhappy about the way it's all been handled.

During my time away, having had time to think it through, I decided I didn't wish to go through with the demotion and was going to approach my manager on my return to suggest further training. I had gone from administrator to manager in one step and was promised various training, none of which has materialised. I had emailed my manager and asked if we could arrange a meeting and as yet he has not replied to me.

Whilst I appreciate that in principle I agreed to the move, am I in a position to ask them to reconsider in the light that none of the promised training has been provided and in that I feel I was pressured into a decision without being given time to consider my options and the meeting was held without any notice or witnesses and without any probationary reviews having taken place?

  • I think you need to think about your position here. There are some questions that you need to ask yourself before choosing to do anything else.
    1. Why did they want to demote you?
    2. Were you meeting the challenge of the job?
    3. Is the company intent of removing you from your position?
    4. What would happen if you were to try and stay in a position your company clearly does not want you to be in?

If it were me, I would arrange a meeting with your regional manager and discuss what has went.on and why you are in the position you are in now. I would do this before trying to do anything.
