what sort of uplift for london?

what sort of uplift in salary should be expected on average for taking a London city job?

I've got no real idea - and not sure where best to start on google.

Edinburgh at present

  • It really depends on the sort of job.

Being in London doesn't automatically make it better paid.

You get some professions which many people move to London to do so an employer knows there will be enough demand for a role to be filled without making they pay generous. On the other hand you could have a similar role out in the sticks where the only way to get the right candidate is to pay a good enough salary for someone to relocate out there.

Personally I got £5k extra when I moved to London, but I was only 2 years into my career at the time and my salary has increased much further since then. Whether that would have happened had I not moved to London I've got no idea.

The NHS gives 4 to 6 grand extra for basic grades for inner London, less for outer. Might give some idea.
  • Ok next question.

Where is the most cost/commute effective place to stay for getting to Oxford Circus?
  • I wouldn't have thought London is much more expensive than Edinburgh (except that possibly the accommodation in the far suburbs will cost more).

For Oxford Circus, I would be looking in the far reaches of the Bakerloo (north) or Central (West) lines. South Bakerloo is now quite trendy and overpriced, as is East London, and I can't think that anywhere on the Victoria line is affordable.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • Ideally we will keep our house in Scotland and only pick up a flat in London. So cheap and a commute under an hour is good
  • Oxford Circus is only a couple of stops on the tube from several mainline stations (Euston, Marylebone, Victoria, Charing Cross) and 3 stops from Kings Cross and St Pancras so you could fine somewhere in outer London with a mainline station and get to Oxford Circus pretty quickly.

However you said in your original post about working in the city and Oxford Circus is in the west end not the city. The city would be stations like Bank and others nearby like Moorgate.
  • To someone from Scotland everything in London is the city unless it's Reading or some such

I suppose it's weighing up living (and affording) a nice bit further out and accepting a longer commute versus the opposite

My mate lives in Edinburgh and works in London.

He used to fly down monday morning and back on friday night and used spareroom for digs, now he commutes every day as he gets all travel expenses paid.
