London does not have its own minimum wage and will be the same as the rest of the country

maybe you are confusing it with the living wage ?

It can be confusing but from April 2016 there will be two national wage schemes in operation which dictate the legal minimum wage rates (based on age across UK).

    1. National Minimum Wage (for those aged 24 and under or on apprenticeships).
This will continue to have 4 tiers (apprentices; under 18s, 18 to 20 and 21 plus) and the rate changes in October each year. Currently the rates are: £3.30; £3.87; £5.30; £6.70 respectively)

    2. National Living Wage (for anyone aged 25 and above)
This will start at £7.20 from 1 April 2016 and change in April each year.

This is all confused by the governments decision to call it a national living wage and the indistinct media use of the phrase "living wage" when talking about either the NLW or the recommended Living Wage rates published by Living Wage Foundation based on cost of living in the UK each October - currently their figures are £8.25 (£9.40 for London) - this is not a mandatory wage level to pay but some employers do use this
  • So when will it be £9.40?
