Unpaid Training Courses....?

Hi there
My other half is a mobile carer employed directly by her company.
She went In the office today to get her weeks rota to find she's been placed on an all day training course by the company one of the days this week. They've taken all her usual call's off her to be covered by others and the course will be unpaid.
Are they allowed to do this or do they have to pay?
I was always under the impression that because she's prepared to work and the training course is for their benefit then it should be paid.
any advice is welcome
Thanks
Matt
