South West trains refund help

My girlfriend and I bought a return ticket from Balham to Winchfield using our Two Together railcard at a total cost of £39. We were unable to make our return journey from Winchfield because there were signalling problems further up the line at Wimbledon so all the trains were cancelled.
As such, we bought two singles from Wokingham to Balham at a total cost of £18.90 (using our railcard).
I subsequently applied to SW trains for a refund and they responded with the following:
"Regarding your refund request for your original return tickets between Balham and Winchfield, as you used the outward portion of your tickets, the refund available will be for the return portion only. Refunds on return portions of tickets are calculated based on the total cost of the return ticket, minus the cost of a standard single fare for the outward journey that was taken (£17.00 between Balham and Winchfield). With this in mind therefore, the total refund due to you is £5.90 (£2.95 per ticket)."
So, I have paid £57.90 in train fares and they want to refund me £5.90?! That is outrageous. Surely they should at least refund the £18.90 for the train we shouldn't have had to take.
Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how to increase their refund offer or am I likely stuck on the £5.90?
