Do you throw out old bottles of Booze ?

Found an unopened bottle of Malibu Rum in the garage, knew I'd had it donkeys years.....been wondering whether to drink it or not. There was no visible date on it, so I opened it, under the cap the date 05/08/05, tasted it and it was as good as new. Had some last night and no bad effects, so now drinking some more.

There is advice on the Malibu website which says its only good for 2 years, and one year after opening (which may well be true after opening). I've thrown Baileys away before but then again that does contain cream, so wouldn't take a chance on that.

What are other peoples experiences.

with high alcohol content booze I wouldn't even bother looking at a 'use by' date! alcohol is a preservative and the higher the percentage of alcohol the longer it will last!
but, drinks such as Baileys which are made with dairy products added - then yes I would be very careful of both use by AND using within a short period (not a problem in my house!).
  • I'm sorry, 'unopened bottle' of booze, can you explain what you mean please?

    :D
  • Of course we do, we drink the contents first
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
  • I found an opened bottle of baily type stuff ina cupboard that i'd forgotten about a few years ago that someone had given me, the lid was really tight but I got it open, and it was lovely. (and only about 3 years out of date)
I've had lager/cider before now that's just a bit less fizzy after its date.
    xx

The only old booze I've ever chucked was a bottle of real ale that had got shoved in the back of a cupboard and forgotten about for around a decade past its use by date - One sniff and and a look at the sludge in the bottom suggested something untoward was going on.

Similarly, something cream-based and sickly was eventually looking lumpy and seperated out, so that got chucked.

Otherwise, good booze keeps for ages, so it gets kept till its drunk.
