British Gas annual service payments

My British Gas service monthly direct debit payments didn't go through whilst my bank account was frozen when I was made bankrupt. There are two payments outstanding which I want to pay. My account has now been unfrozen and changed to a basic account. I called British Gas to reinstate the account and restart the monthly direct debit. The guy on the phone said for some reason the system was not letting him set up monthly payments but showing that full annual service charge of £300+ would be taken. He said he would let system settle down and call me back.

I am wondering if they were notified of my bankruptcy status and if they will insist on me paying the annual fee in one go rather than monthly instalments?

  • This could well be the reason.
The BG insurance policy is an annual one, but you pay by instalments - in theory you could be applying for credit to pay the premium by installments even though there might be no interest charged.
This might have involved a credit search resulting in them finding out about the Br.
