thinking of starting a business

Hi all, I know I am probably in the wrong thread but I still might get some help.

I am a 19 year old and I have been claiming jsa for the best part of a year and with not being able to get work with lack of experience I have decided to start up my own business because to be honest it is getting rather boring now doing nothing and feels like I am wasting my life.

anyway, I know within the first couple of months I will be working my a***e off with long hours and very little custom due to the fact I am a new business. But before I start out I was wondering what financial help would be available to me until I start earning enough to have a proper wage (by the way I am doing event planning, hairdressing and make-up artistry)

thanks for any help (no hate please as this is a genuine dilemma///:):money:

as you're on JSA look in to the new enterprise allowance, its essentially JSA being paid whilst you start up your business, for around 6 months, you can also apply for small start up loans backed by the government

What experience and/or qualifications do you have in the fields you're interested in? Have you done specific training or worked already in them? I'm not sure how keen people will be to use your business if you have no track record at all.
  • thanks for your comment

i have a level 3 in hairdressing and worked in the college salon all through my level 2 and 3 ans i have recently completed an event management course with qc and have done a couple of event whilst doing that (and have managed to build a portfolio). i have been trying to get experience to get a job but now-a-days you need experience to even do work experience
  • thanks for your reply,

i am already with the princes trust (as the job center refused to help, and is not happy about my idea) so ive emailed them. but i have come on here to see if anyone has been through same thing.

thanks so much for you help though
  • Years at college and qualified to do the job, yet nobody can ?
They need to do college, then start on the floor from day one and learn how to do the job.
The reason for this is like most college teachers, they do not have the foggiest idea how to do the job themselves.

This college bulls*** is actually making it harder for people to get jobs.

As for the business idea, get some kit and cards printed and hit the shop windows and facebook groups, it has to be better than the dole.
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • haha, totally agree mate, college is bulls***.

Thats what I am planning to do as i am fed up of people looking down to me like im scum and tbh i really would rather be working than going in there because they don't even help.

i went into my local job center to ask for support, they just said it was a bad idea because its 'not a steady job'

Have you thought of renting a chair? Plenty of hairdressers do this and it's a good way of building up your own clientele thus gradually diversifying with the other areas you're qualified in.
  • I had thought of renting a chair, so either going to go round hairdressers near me or do a massive ring around. thanks for your help though

    Brilliant idea.
I would also advise hooking up with the local chamber of commerce (most large towns have them) and enrol on free business start up courses, business meetings, advice on business plans.
  • Thanks, I will give them a ring tomorrow and find out more information about them. x
