I was put off the Costco Manitoba Flour after buying a sack; as soon as I opened it I noticed a very floury cobwebby thing stick to the inside, I pulled it off and took it apart, thankfully with tools, nestling inside was a huge long grub thing. I've never seen one like it before, and as it was very floury, couldn't really identify it. Took the lot back to Costco and got my money back, but it put me off buying the stuff.
I tend to buy Dove's organic bread flours but Asda don't have any organic flours on the shelves (on Tuesday anyway) There weren't even shelf labels indicating where they would be. Does anyone know if they're giving up on organic, as they'd no butter either?

  • Our Asda had Dove organic in this week and there was quite a bit, but it was separate from the other flours with other organic baking stuff.

I bought hovis strong white flour and I think its great, never made such lovely bread, but I might try a cheaper alternative next.
  • Odds-n-sods is right, Canadian wheat has been used in the UK for a very long time, we don't really have the right sort of weather in the UK to grow wheat that has enough gluten to make the best bread.

Rockie4, is that Caudwell's Mill? Their wholemeal flour is lovely stuff :)

To the OP, you could try asking at a local bakery (if you're lucky enough to have one near you that bakes on site) but they'd probably be reluctant to sell it to you and tbh, you probably would be able to get it cheaper if you chop and change and take advantage of special offers at the big supermarkets. My mum owns a small bakery and the wholesale price of flour at the moment is shocking.
Can you give the address of Caudwell's Mill please? I live in Bolton so Derbyshire would be a nice day out. Cheers.

It's close to Bakewell, Haddon Hall and the Chatsworth Farm Shop too so there's plenty to see if you fancy a day out :)

I noticed last week that Tesco's value flour had gone up from 31p to 43p.
It's still 31p at Morrisons and Asda, so it looks like the price increases are filtering down to the shop floor.
I just wish I had some room to stock up.
