Hi there
Been to the flat and looked at the meter and the bill.
It is a Metric meter.
The bill was not for 105 units, the bill was estimated, at 53 units. (I had actually used 105 units, according to my reading).
On the bill those 53 units equated to 1669 kwh. That sounds to me (using your earlier calculation, Cardew, of 105 units equating to 3000+ kwh) as though I am being charged for an Imperial meter. I wonder if you agree?
The bill also asks me to multiply the gas units by a metric conversion factor (does that matter) of 2.83.
I'd be grateful for any help...

Yes you are being wrongly charged for an Imperial meter. A metric meter is approx 11kWh for a unit and an Imperial meter approx 30kWh for a unit.(work it out exactly with the link expresso has posted above - the calorific value varies slightly)
Looks like you are going to get a small rebate. The actual consumption of 105 units will be around 1,200kWh.
I hope your previous supplier charged for a metric meter!0 -
Cardew, I have thanked your post, but I want to thank you personally. Without your help I would not have thought this through properly. I printed out the correspondence and took it down to Leicester with me, so that I knew what I was doing when I checked meter, bill and readings.
The small rebate is nothing compared to being charged the right price - and also knowing that I am not inadvertently using a ridiculous amount of gas.
I guess I just follow this up with BG, telling them what I know now.
Many many thanks again,

If BG's service centre is anything like normal, your problems are just starting!!!
I would just send them a short letter(not phone) explaining you have been charged for an Imperial meter when you have a Metric meter, and ask them to sent you a revised bill.
That will be a lot less hassle than hanging on the phone; as there isn't a lot of money involved it won't matter if it takes a little longer to sort out.
They may wish to send a meter reader to verify it is metric.0 -
Just thought I'd update you all on this one - it is finally sorted, with your thanks, especially Cardew. If BG's service centre is anything like normal, your problems are just starting!!!
How right you were! It has taken until December! And loads of hassle. No response to a letter, so I got on the blower. Quoted the meter number, date of exchange etc etc/ I had to do a test burn to see if it was my meter that was using the gas. And still they didn't believe me. They said I could not prove that I had a metric meter. I nearly took a photograph of where it said M3 on it.
And the next prophecy..They may wish to send a meter reader to verify it is metric.
Yep, they did that. And he/she went back and said it was an imperial meter! AAARGH...
Eventually having been escalated up the customer service ladder several times a sensible person listened to me. I was ranting. But he said don't rant, I am promising you I will sort it out. I couldn't stop ranting I had heard it all before. But he insisted that he was promising me some help
And eventually I got the correct bill - but I have been threatened with court action and have been crying on the phone with frustration. That is not right.
But without your help nothing would have happened - even though I instinctively knew that I couldn't have been using that much gas.
So I had to pay an extra £55 for gas used up to Dec o7. Now I am about to switch suppliers for a cheaper deal, dual fuel and hopefully better service.
But thanks again, MSE friends0 -
Not checked recently but for single fuel Gas Only, BG always used to be the dearest.
There's two companies I refuse to give my business to, due to being useless, one's British Gas and the other is NPower. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
