utilities

Hi,
What happens to your gas and electric bills when you become bankrupt, I have outstanding amounts on each , only small amounts, do I need to include these in the bankrupcy? Do I need to call them on the day to give them a final reading ? And do they normally make you have a payment meter instead of bills which I would prefer to avoid if at all possible . Or should I get final readings now and transfer the accounts into one of my grown up childrens names that are still at home ? Really not sure what to do for the best .
Thanks

I would transfer your accounts to a supplier with whom you do not have debt in your own name. This should ensure you are able to continue a post pay energy account.

You don't need todo anything. They will usually be informed by the OR that you are BR. Most include everything up to BR date into BR and then will start a new account for you from that date. They will be in touch with you.

    Hi,
I have not seen any utility company operate a policy of mandatory pre pay simply because someone has become insolvent (BR or DRO) - With or without arrears.

As long as you keep up to date with the payments from now on starting from scratch i.e a zero balance then you won't get a prepayment meter.

All the arrears will be part of BR and can never be recovered by the use of a prepayment meter.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • When I went bankrupt, nothing changed with regards to my utilities.

My examiner asked if I was in arrears with any of them, I wasn't and things just carried on as normal. I don't have a pre-payment meter, I pay by direct debit each month.
