in Cutting tax
My wife and I have both received letters from HMRC informing us that they are taking us out of self assessment because they have 'noticed that'the only reason you fill in a tax return is to claim a repayment of tax on your bank and/or building society interest'. This is not the case and self assessment for 2014/15 showed that we had both over paid tax which we have reclaimed. If we are taken out of self assessment future over payments will not be identified so we will continue to submit tax returns. Have others received this misleading standardised letter?

Why are you continually overpaying tax ?
Can you not address the root cause rather than reclaim via SA ?0 -
Nothing to stop you voluntarily submitting SA returns.0

Agreed, I have had this letter also, but my mileage in my own car was down last year due to an operation which meant I couldn't drive. I'll continue to send one.“And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

In my case the overpayment is because my tax code reflects only my regular gift aided contributions to charities and each year I make a number of one off contributions. I assume this can only be sorted out at the end of the year.
Of course I can continue to submit returns and I will but I thought the letter was misleading and seemed to have more to do with reducing HMRC workload than helping me though it was worded as if to convey that message.0 -

Most people would rather not submit SA returns, so being taken off the system would be seen as a favour to you. A lot of the workload is automated anyway - for people who complete online.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

so rather than complete an entire tax return (which many people regard an unnecessary annoyance) you simply submit the relevant claim form as outlined by Sheramber.0
