I feel somewhat uneasy when I read these stories re "living wage". Having been involved in annual Union/Company negotiations for many years prior to retirement, the Union reps. nearly always seek "to maintain differentials" - so an increase in the bottom end of ~ 5% triggers a demand for the same %age in hourly rates considerably greater than this living wage. Not good news for hard pressed manufacturing Companies.

It's not all good. My wife and I both work for large companies that are adopting the Living Wage in April. We are both going to get a pay CUT as a result.

We both work unsociable hours and get a premium for doing so. In April the premiums and our bonuses are being scrapped. Our colleagues who don't do unsociable hours will get a pay rise but the increase in basic pay will be less than what we will lose. So the changes are being partly funded by employees.

Really can't see my employer adopting the voluntary living wage any time soon. But at least i will get a rise in april, that is if us part timers don't suddenly become surplus to requirements in the meantime.
