I have a bottle of unopened red wine vinegar with a use by date of jan 2013 and opened bottle of balsamic with used by date of March 2015. And an unopened one date june 2015.
Are they still ok to use? I know that vinegar is used to preserve things.
Don't ask I use them in my spag bog or mince but hardly make it now. I have loads of pasta that is out of date by a year or two that I am very slowly working.
The red wine vinegar seems to have settled and has a gunk in the bottom.
Do I bin or do I keep using them until they are gone?

Yes, use it. Vinegar is essentially wine or cider that's gone off. So it had already gone off when you bought it & not much else can go wrong with it!Angie - GC May 25: £74.30/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 21/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

I didn't even know vinegar had death dates on them?!
I recently finished our bottle of malt vinegar that we brought with us from our old flat when we moved into this house. I don't know exactly how old it was but, we moved into this house 19 years ago......0 -

I can't see vinegar having a 'use by' date.
My old bottle says BBE.
Some jars & tins I have in my cupbaord just have a date. I take that to mean BBE not use by.
BBE means it's still perfectly OK to use, it just might not taste as good as it originally did.
I would use them.0 -

I hope that was a joke, but vinegar is great for cleaning, especially in hard water areas. You can put it in your washing machine instead of calgon, use it instead of bleach (it doesn't leave a smell, so it's much better for people with asthma/other respiratory illnesses), clean windows and mirrors with it - leaves them sparkling; recently I soaked the little black thingy that directs the steam to the veg in my steamer for about 5-6 hours in savers vinegar (while I was at work), it was covered in limescale before, now looks like new! Vinegar is a great cleaner, and even if you don't want to put it in your food any more, you can still use it up. Don't bin it!

Is it really 'use by' or could it be BBE (best before end) date?
