Can I apply for new jobs while off sick

Hi

I am off sick and might still be for the next 6 weeks. I would like to know if I can apply for a new job while I am still off sick. I am worried that my employer will not be happy by just the realisation that I am considering to leave after more than 5 years at the job. I really want a change - a job that uses different skills and muscles. My off sick is paid.

Thanks

You may be right in that they may not be happy (are you well enough to attend interviews for example?). If there's something they can do to help your current role in relation to your sickness perhaps Occupational Health could help you?

Nothing really technically to stop you applying for other jobs though.

Legally, I doubt there's any problem, but it's bad form to take extended sick leave and then apply for a new job. You might not get a great reference from your current employer (ie they might tell your prospective employer what you've done) and it will make life difficult. just go back to work when you're well, then start looking for a new job.

I'd start applying now. You might miss the perfect job if you wait. Your employer will get over it, they always do.

Yes put yourself first.Just because you are off sick from work, should not put you for looking for other jobs. If the company suddenly went tits up, forcing closedown, redundancies etc, do you think they will think of you?

If your employer thinks you might take a lot of sick leave in future - for instance a manual job and back pain - they might be glad to be rid of that potential liability.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.
