The DLR's Get Out More guide this month details all the green spaces in the docklands, so winners can find out exactly where to head to play with their Frisbee with all locations only short rides on the DLR network. The Guide can be downloaded from http://getoutmore.dlr.co.uk.
Fun Frisbee Facts
- Over 200 million Frisbees have been sold worldwide in the last 50 years.
- The distance record, 693.3ft, was set by Scott Stokely in 1998.
- Frisbees have featured in Back To The Future, Tom and Jerry and The Simpsons.
- Wimbledon legend Boris Becker used to train with a Frisbee to increase his stamina around the court.
London Ultimate is a professional Frisbee league operating in the capital. It has a summer league with 24 teams taking part this year. Many more Ultimate players compete at other levels, from casual pickup games to national and international events, with an estimated 600 active Ultimate players in London alone. Below are some etiquette guidelines and tips for playing the game:
Do you need a referee once you start taking the game more seriously?
Frisbee actually has fair play built-in. The game is played without referees, even at World Championship level, and there is a system by which fouls and disputes are settled by the players themselves. Unlikely as this might sound, it really does work! This breeds a kind of etiquette that you simply don't see in other team sports.
Can I have a game of Frisbee with just one other person or is there a recommended minimum number of players?
You can have fun simply throwing a disc back and forth with just one other person. The best players go out and work on their throws whenever they get the chance. A standard game requires 14 players (seven on each team), but it works just as well with smaller teams. There is also a three-a-side version of the game known as mini; where the pitch is reduced to just 30m x 20m.
How hard should I throw a disc?
That depends how far you want the disc to go, and how quickly you want it to get there. The best players can throw a disc 50 or 60 metres during a game (a long throw like this is called a 'huck'), which requires both power and skill. Most passes are between three and 30 metres.
And are there any rules as to how high a Frisbee should go?
The basic rules are pretty simple: You can't run with the disc, and if the disc touches the ground, the other team take possession. But you can throw the disc however you like. If you need to throw a high disc over the heads of defenders, the best throw to use is the 'hammer', where you throw the disc upside down. This gives it a trajectory more like a ball than a flying disc.
How long do team games last?
The winner in a game is the first team to score 15, so games typically last between an hour and an hour and a half.
How can I improve my throwing skills?
When you're starting out, you need a buddy to practice throwing and catching with. Most newcomers join a team and meet other players that way.
As you get more proficient there are a few areas of the game you can work on by yourself. To improve your distance throwing, take ten discs to the park, choose a target 50 to 80 metres away, and throw each disc in turn, seeing how close to the target you can land them. Then pick them all up and throw them back in the other direction.
Because Frisbee is such a physical game, top players also put in lots of training hours each week working on their sprint speed, endurance, flexibility and upper body strength. You can hit the gym or the track on your own, although a training partner is always useful to help push you on through your workout.
Frisbee is a tremendously social sport. Half the fun of it is hanging out with your team mates (and the other teams) at practices or tournaments.
