Declined Mortgage but not in writing

Hi all,
Wanted to pick the minds of the MSE hive. We've been declined a re-mortgage after many agonising months with Nationwide, who lost our application once, said we passed affordability only to do a complete u-turn on the final offer. Despite feeling a little misled (I'm self-employed and in the end my erratic earning patterns went against me), we've accepted their reasons and their assessment of the risk but the decision was only given verbally via our broker. Am I right to insist on having this in writing? Surely for our own credit file and records, we should have the final feedback from Nationwide. Especially after filling in a tonne of forms and sending them a swathe of paperwork week after week.
I've been given a number but wouldn't mind some insights before I call.

Im sure you can ask for it in writing if they do not send it automatically...but why? What difference will it make?
Most people would just bin the letter once opened and read anyway.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Why do you you need it in writing for your records?
Sounds like it'd just be a reminder of a previous disappointment.I am a Mortgage BrokerYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Broker, so you need to take my word for it.
