2013-2014 Self Assessment Tax Return Error

Thought I'd get ahead of the game and submit my return online as early as possible to avoid the nightmare I endured during my very first return earlier this year.

Looking at my 2013-2014 data, I have just noted a colossal error. I submitted figures for employment which should be entered for this return 2014-2015. Absolutely horrified! Due to it being my first time and to ensure I didn't miss anything out and find myself in hot water, I've made an almighty mistake.

Done some research and I understand that I am within the timeframe to make an amendment online which I will do tomorrow. I'm now unsure as to the correct order in which to proceed.

Should I make the amendment to 2013-2014 and explain that the figures submitted were for 2014-2015, wait 3-4 weeks until I receive a response from HMRC and then submit my 2014-2015

Or

Make the amendment and submit the current return tomorrow as planned and include the figures already submitted in error???

The only positive I can draw from this is that it's 28/10/15 and not 28/1/16 :eek:

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

  • I would amend the 2013/14 return and submit the 2014/15. It is all automated now, so might not even be noticed.

Thank you. When you say 'noticed', I expected that I would either owe HMRC some money, get a small tax refund or, worse case scenario, be fined for being careless. I didn't think that it could not be noticed or have I misunderstood you?

I had a small earnings exemption last year, which no longer exists - and I got a refund of £60! I'm expecting the worse when I now add it again to 14/15 and amend it for 13/14. Hopefully it all evens out and I owe them no more than £60 :o

  • By 'noticed' I meant by a human being who will demand an explanation!. Your statement will get adjusted automatically when the changes are picked up.
