MoneySaving Poll: Is it time to ditch 1p and 2p coins?
Comments

When the Government replaced 240 old pennies with 100 new pennies to £1 we got instant inflation.
For months afterwards I would reject items (especially foodstuffs in supermarkets) whose "new" price bore NO resemblance to its former price.
Don't give them the opportunity to con the nation again. Keep these smaller value coins - or lose control over prices again.0 -
Scrap them. Pointless coin. Things get rounded down more often than not. Many things become advertised at £3.95 instead of £3.99. In Australia you can get 2 cents worth of petrol for free every time you put petrol in th car. Purchase £10.02 of fuel and hand over £10.00 as the £0.02 is rounded down.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

If it was up to me, I'd ditch the fiddly little 1p and 5p coins so that all prices would be a multiple of 2p. It would eliminate two categories of coin whilst limiting price increases to 1p maximum (except where retailers cheat).0

Can I have all the 1p and 2p coins that all those voters said they don't bother with?Being brave is going after your dreams head on0

We of the older generation remember the last change from pound /shillings &spence to today's money and the way the prices went up on change over day it's just another way of pushing the prices up by the back door.0

I'm with you Fred we might be getting older but no stupid.0

I don't agree it would put prices up. The rules are clear, round up or down. Even if prices went up a couple of cents, wouldn't it be worth it to get rid of them.0

Prices will stay the same, why would they change just because you can't pay exactly with cash? Almost half of purchases are electronic these days where you can pay exactly what you're paying now..
People don't release the drag on the economy having pointless coins in the system:
Less coins to count in the system in banks, shops etc
Less complicated coin machines in stores
Less wasted time at tills getting change
Its a win win in my opinion.0 -
I think I noticed shops in the Netherlands doing this in the 1980s.
The stuff you want to buy comes to 7.23, hand over 10.00 and get 2.80 change.
Banks and shops are trying to encourage people to pay with contactless cards more, so they won't need to mess about with as much change or notes anyway. The pub didn't object to being paid by card for 2 beers.0 -
Get rid of the annoying little coins. Boycott any gazumpers!0
