I got a whole new career out of volunteering for a charity. They could not afford to pay anyone for the work.

Companies that prefer to use unpaid job seekers are a whole other story.

That is what I am against, and it is something which is happening more and more.
I have worked for a large, well known charity in the past, and the people at the top of their organisation were incredibly well paid.

Sorry, I do not see unpaid work of any kind as an "opportunity", I see it as one person or maybe an organisation exploiting people.

So, who is exploiting the volunteer hospice worker who offers to sit with a dying person to allow the carer a couple of hours to sleep?

The terminally ill patient? The exhausted carer?

A healthy society should be all about pulling together not pulling away.

I always fancied doing this from a young age (im 37 now). Im off this week and have been looking at private detective agencies on the net. I know its not all glamour and adrenalin or like life on mars. I have seen shows like 24 hours in police custody and the role of civilian investigating officer appealed to me, its like being a CID officer but being constantly present at the station to undertake questioning of those bought in to custody and liase with legal representatives. Does anyone have any experience or worked in these roles and can tell me about it?.

Dealing with interviewees (in custody or voluntary attenders) requires a very wide skill set: patience, tolerance, knowledge of the building blocks and enablers of offences, the ability to completely mask your own feelings (even if repulsed, angry, frustrated) etc.

Some forces are using civvies staff but a lot of these are ex job. Even custody officers can now be civilians.

Be aware that your work would be evidential in nature and you would therefore need to be a credible witness in open court.

The paperwork and processes involved in disclosure during a trial are stringent so you'll need to have the ability to be accurate in your record keeping etc.

You also need to have tolerance of the diversity that society brings - something you sometimes seem to lack in your posts.

What an absolutely ridiculous attitude to have. Do you include all voluntary work in this bizarre sweeping statement?

My opinion is they are a nuisance to paid employees and undermine people in the work force. I know of a man who recently got a medal for 20 years volunteering for the council. Wow a medal costing a few pounds when he says he was told he had saved then almost half a million pounds by not having to pay him. How does he live and eat or heat? on fresh air maybe. No employer big or small will refuse free labour from some idiot offering it all for free. Those in paid positions who suddenly find themselves working with volunteer's feel insecure and rightly so. Do us all a favour and stop it you are ruining pay rates.
With such ill informed, judgmental attitudes I doubt you would fit in well in modern policing (that relies on many volunteers). Maybe twenty years ago, certainly not now.
Don't be surprised to find yourself quoted on an unrelated thread and told off for being in favour of scabbing.

Thanks to the two forum members who sent me PM's giving advice and training for the PI industry. It is much appreciated and I will be contacting one of the training agencies based in the north west.
Britain is great but Manchester is greater

You want to be a PI, yet objected so strongly when someone suggested looking into your private affairs, in fact you accused them of harassment and claimed to be going to the police about it. Double standards much?

the first lesson in PI training is, if you pay for one of these courses you've already failed, as you obviously didn't investigate them very well...

I see you have changed your profile from Manchester to UK and from payroll to clerical. I could be a detective with no training.
