Is your pond water looking a bit drab? Do you crave that extra sparkle in water and long to be able to see your koi properly? A new bead filter could be the answer, and if you're the lucky winner of this competition you can be assured of some clear waters ahead.
Here's a bit of the science behind the long-established bead filter... These filters are closed vessels containing food-grade polyethylene granules or beads. The form and size of the beads create a large surface to which bacteria and suspended solids can attach. The bead filters have two ways of filtering koi pond water:
<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:P></O:P>
1. mechanical filtration
While in operation, the beads inside the bead filter will float into the top half of the body and form a compacted 'static' bed. By pushing pond water through these tightly packed beads any organic particles will be strained out completely. As the beads become blocked the resistance to the pump will increase and the pressure in the unit will also increase which will be shown on the pressure gauge.
<O:P></O:P>
2. biological filtration
Bacteria attach themselves to the surface of the beads, forming a thin bio film. The bacteria in the bio film turn ammonia and nitrite into nitrate efficiently. To create a good bio film it is important to clean the bead filter correctly. Cleaning the bead filter correctly will mean that the organic dirt/waste will be removed, leaving the bio film on the beads.
how many beads do I need?
It is important all bead filters are installed with the adequate mechanical filtration necessary to remove any larger particles prior to the water entering the unit. Here are the recommended amounts:
<O:P></O:P>
Model In/out diameter Diameter of body Height Max pond size Beads
<O:P></O:P>
PL65 1.5in 26in (650mm) 850mm 8,000 gallons 120ltr
PL80 2in 33in (820mm) 1,050mm 16,000 gallons 200ltr
<O:P></O:P>
<O:P></O:P>
The bead filters are produced from high-quality polyester according to strict water standards. The filters have been tested thoroughly in a variety of applications, especially ponds with fish and in particular, koi. The proven quality is why a five year warranty on component failure can be offered.
