If you wish to terminate your employment, you must give notice in writing of not less than four weeks.

In the context given that is a standalone statement.
    pretty clear to me

Following successful completion of your probationary period

Op hasn't reached this trigger point.

Assuming that is contained within the same paragraph, it would seem to me that the context is that it applies on completion of probation.

If there's nothing anywhere else then I'd give them 1 week's notice.

I would also question a contract which did not give parity, ie. after completion of probation they can give you one week's notice but you have to give four.

That's the nature of a master/ servant relationship.

I guess I'm more of an egalitarian.

Have you thought about contacting ACAS? Maybe they can point you in the right direction re. how the paragraph can be interpreted, from a legal perspective.
