Best backache rub

Both my mum and I swear by Deep Relief gel for back pain, but it is £4.99 for a 50ml tube which seems expensive. Mum can't get it on prescription (even though she's 90) as it is not a generic product. She was given a prescription alternative, but says it doesn't work as well as the branded one.

Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative that does the trick?
:D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

It isn't a rub I'm afraid but I find that the radox muscle soak and the deep heat bath bubbles work well. I suffer with a lot of aches and pains and have tried lots of different thinks although deep heat is good and works well it does tend to stink a lot so I looked round for bath things which had a nicer smell but would do the same job. I got them both from savers. I hope this helps you. The radox although its a bubble bath it also works well as a showergel. I haven't tried the deep heat as a shower gel.

ask your pharmacist for TRANSVASIN - it's a heat rub and costs about £3 ish for an 80g tube. my local PCT have advised all our local Gp's to prescribe this as a first line treatment for pain.

www.idaromatics.co.uk This is an aromatherapy shop that sells a natural cream made up of black pepper, helichyrisum etc (cant remember what else is in it) I think its great and now all my friends and hubby mum gets it to. It is based in Leeds and i think it is about £3.50 a pot. They do mailorder and wholesale and if you can prove you are part of the medical profession you get £10% off.

There is something called Deep Freeze they sell it in a tube (gel) or a spray.

You can buy it from Morrisons supermarket and chemists, the tube costs £1-95 and it works very well my mum and sister-in-law tell me.

My understanding is the doctors have been told not to prescribe branded products where there is an identical generic product available and I endorse that view. However, You mum needs to tell her GP that the generic product is not working and ask for Deep Heat to be prescribed. The directive is in place for a number of reasons, not least to end the days of backhanders for prescribing products under a tie in with pharmaceutical companies. It is not intended to deprive patients of the most effective treatment. It may be that many other patients get relief from the generic product but we are all different and have individual tolerances.

If your mum has made them aware of her difficulties she is not giving them a chance to put it right. If they still refuse to prescribe what she needs then she should first complain to the practice manager and then the PCT.

Deep Relief Gel is actually Ibuprofen Gel with Menthol added. You can buy cheaper versions of Ibuprofen Gel and I would have thought it was possible to have it on prescription. The addition of Menthol is just to give that cold and hot feeling which helps relieve the pain when you first apply it. HTH.

My OH has problems with his back and shoulders; his GP has prescribed both Feldene Gel and Traxam for him in the past and they both help.
