Help with income tax after brief second job

Evening all,

My DS has just arrived home from work with his most recent payslip and he seems to have a bit of a tax problem . Im usually quite good with these things but I can't get my head around this one.

At the start of the year he had the standard tax code (£11k ish) and all was well. At this point, he only had this one job.

To boost his income he took a seasonal zero hours job with another company and worked 30 hours over a 3 week period earning £ 239.73 gross and £191.93 after BR tax.

Unfortunately the tax code for his main job has changed to 359L this month and without any notification from HMRC.

Poor lad was expecting his salary to be around £1K and he has lost more than half of it to tax.

I realise that we will have to speak to HMRC but I was wondering if anyone can explain what is going on?

I imagined his tax code with the main employer would remain the same and then always BR on the little bit of extra work he did.

He should have received a P2 from the tax office telling him why the code has changed - did he ?
He needs to phone HMRC, best time is 7.45am or Sat morning, and get it sorted. They have probably assumed he is still working for the other company and allocated part of the tax code to that job but a phone call should sort it and he will get the overpaid tax back in the next pay packet.

    Thanks for your reply.

He definitely hasn't received a notification from HMRC (he's just a young lad so anything official is brought to me to investigate :D).

He is working Overtime in the morning so will give HMRC a phone when he gets home at 9am, fingers crossed the phones won't be too busy then.

Luckily he doesn't need the money for bills etc as he's still at home with us, it would be an absolute crisis if you had essential bills to cover so I must say I'm disappointed this happened with no correspondence from HMRC.
