Splitting return ticket into two journeys

I have a return ticket from X to Z and when looking for when I could use that ticket I saw that it needed me to change at Y with a 20 min wait between trains.
Rather than take the suggested train I could I actually leave the station, come back a few hours later than take a later train to finally reach Z?

Probably, so long as your ticket is not restricted in some way. Show it to a member of staff and ask if "break of journey" is permitted on the way back.0

Probably, but as I do not know where X and Z are, or what the ticket type is, I cannot say conclusively.I have a return ticket from X to Z and when looking for when I could use that ticket I saw that it needed me to change at Y with a 20 min wait between trains.
