Hi,
My boyfriend has taken out a number of payday loans several years ago and not bothered to pay them back. They are up to around £7000. He has since moved and so isnt being contacted by the companies so hes not sure how many or to which companies he had the loans with. Hed like to pay them off so he can get his credit rating better but isn sure where to start. Is there a way to check your debts? Any help or advice much appreciated! Thank you in advance

Obtain credit reports from Experian/Equifax/Call Credit and work from there.0 -
He can look at a credit search to see what names appear under the debts in his name, Can he not check bank statements for the amounts paid in and by whom ?
Failing either of the above there are a good number of actual lenders that are UK based or lend to UK residents so writing to them all would be both time consuming and slow getting the details through.0 -
You can sign up to noddle for free, enter in all past address details, that should list a number of companies along with their name and address which is a good starting point and is totally free. You can also sign up to clearscore which is another free service and do the same.0

Even if he pays them off in full, the defaults will remain on his credit record for up to 6 years, depending on how long ago he defaulted. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Be careful, if they are several years old and it has been over 6 years since he last made a payment too them, the debts no longer legally enforceable.
They can still write letters to you asking for the money, but they have no legal remit to do anything about it.
Avoid making a costly mistake by researching first.
Use the free credit reports for one months access to see what his credit looks like and then cancel it.
If you have questions after post them here.0 -
Hi Katy
Obtaining his credit file will potentially make your boyfriend "visible" to any old creditors he has, so be aware he could start receiving fresh demands at his current address as a result. If he wants to know for sure what's on there, there isn't really any way around this.
That said, if the debts are over six years old already there may no longer be any trace of them on his file, and not a great deal they can do to enforce their debts.

How would that work - surely a lenders shouldn't be able to see if someone has accessed their own credit report?0 -
