    I've been Money Tipped!
Either way, I would see myself if they hired staff who didn't speak English well or acknowledges customers as a negative myself, they could have good skills in the warehouse side so that would be a negative.

I do remember years ago having an interview at local Morrisons cafe to be told outright they thought I was overqualified and were worried I would leave to go back to education or to a better job, they actually called me in just to say that lol.

My bet would be that CV go through an electronic screening process that looks for the buzz words. You CV probably doesn't fit the bill.
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
  • Depends on the calibre of the other applicants. If you are competing with other people who have experience in retail, and especially if they are coming from other supermarket chains, it doesn't matter what qualifications or 'customer facing' experience you have. Even working in a charity shop would be better than say, being a driving instructor.

As the post above also points out, your CV needs to skills match with what is given in the job specification.

Depends on the manager too - some managers don't want to employ people who are likely going to be able to out wit them in the future and be difficult for them to manage.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

My girlfriend went for a job earlier this year, which she got.
She was told after she got the job that there was 4 people interviewed. 2 were apparantly rubbish and the other was over qualified. They chose my mrs as they thought the other girl would leave as soon as something better came along.

Im not exactly sure how that was a bost to my gf's confidence but she was just happy she got the job.

One of my first jobs was working on a till at a cinema... I was sacked from that job because I was useless. It was so mind numbing that i had no interest. My next job was working for a bank which had a lot more to it and within 12 months I was promoted and then again 6 months later.

I am now self employed and I think I am good at my job, but thats because there is always something to do and many different things to do.

Personally I think people that can sit there all day and concentrate deserve a decent wage as it is not easy (in my opinion) no matter how low you think the job is. The fact your calling it a bottom level job makes me think the decision makers there have made the right decision in not interviewing you as you would have no real intention being there in 6-12 months?

They are looking for the best people for the job.

Your girlfriend was the best person for the job. Don't let the comments get to her. I would like a job with much less responsibility but if I submit my normal CV I appear over qualified and don't get the job. I have even made an attempt to downplay my previous experience but when I do that I don't get the job as I don't have enough experience. Can't win. I'll just stay self employed.

Our local cinema doesn't have a dedicated ticket counter any more I think for the reason you've posted. It's mind numbingly boring. Instead the tickets are now sold at the refreshments counter and the staff do a wide variety of tasks instead of just selling tickets. They appear to be enjoying themselves more.

I think some of you are being a bit harsh on the OP.
I want work and have submitted my CV to all the supermarkets, high street shops, department stores, and have received absolutely no replies. I think the main things going against me, is that I have decent (though not great) exam results, managerial experience (in finance, not in retail), age (57) and lastly no retail experience.
It is a tough old World out there, and not getting any feedback time after time makes you feel bitter and frustrated, especially when folks on MSE keep saying there are plenty of jobs around.

The comments didnt get to her, I think they went above her head (shes not the sharpest lol). She actually loves the job and is happy there so its not a problem.

Could you put a covering letter with it? Im not exactly sure how you would say I am over qualified but looking for a job with less responsiblity without it coming across badly or arrogantly.

I know what you mean though, doing what I do is the best job I have ever had and working for myself is amazing. But there are times where I do just think stacking shelves without any stress or pressure sounds pretty good.

Wouldn't you feel a little bitter if you thought you were being rejected due to having better grades? It's a backwards system. You go there to do some shopping, a new foreign woman is working there. She barely speaks English, and she doesn't even say hello or smile at you when you are going through checkout. Why employ her and not even give an interview to my partner?

They rejected someone who came here from eastern europe, has plenty of work experience in similar settings, and has acquired A grades in GCSE English and Math. Meanwhile, they will happily take other polish workers who can barely speak English and definitely have not acquired GCSE's. Regardless, she has now found work with a much better company. It's their loss, because I know she would have stayed with Lidl and would have been a good employee.

I've now had it confirmed that they actually do this. I found out from someone who used to work for them in this very store. He said your A grades are the problem, if you had all F's they'd have taken you.

Gosh, chip on shoulder much? It's not your achievements that keep you unemployed, it's that attitude.

Except that if the candidate, as in the case of the OP, is not getting to the interview stage, then "chip on shoulder" or "attitude" will not come into the equation.;)
Never mind, you keep doing your bit of amateur "Pyschoanalysis":rotfl:
