I got a Southern rail Smartcard as they were offering discounts on travel, but alas these have disappeared. Furthermore, after confirming with their head office, you cannot use them with ticket splits on a single train journey. At the split point, you MUST get off the train, exit via the barrier, then re-enter the platform. By which time, of course, the train has left, and your ticket may not be valid on the next train.
