PPI scam phone call??

Evening everyone, just wanted a little bit of expert advice please.

Yesterday, I received yet another call re: PPI - they asked for me by my maiden name (I've only been married since 2008!) and I'm starting to get a bit shirty with these people because if they want my business, they could at least get my name right! Anyway, during the conversation they mentioned that in my maiden name, I had a Barclaycard (from 2001 - 2009) which to be honest, I can't re-call having. Now, if I were calling someone I would, at the very least, not mention the name of the company which you're trying to investigate to the person whose business you're trying to obtain because I called Barclaycard today, gave them as much information as I could (addresses etc..) and they're telling me that there is no information on their system to suggest I have previously had a card with them.

I'm guessing this PPI company may have been fishing for information as I honestly didn't think I had a card but why would they say I did?

Many thanks.
Debt as of Sept' 2015 (LBM!): £36,351  (sickening)
Monthly outgoings on debt alone: £1243/month

We're on the right path, we got ourselves here..we're a bit lost, but we'll find our way back again!

True story: I work a backshift and lock up the office at night.

When answering the phone, I use the company name which is the owners name.

I've lost count of the number of PPI/other claim calls that come through, one of whom actually
argued with me, that I was owed PPI. Even after I said "This is a business" and pointed out there were another 20 odd phones in the office.

Anyway I digress; I would say never give ANY person info, maiden names etc over the phone unless, perhaps it is a call you have had arranged; I would just say "You can mail me the details you have" and hang up (or say "Sod off")

Yes - totally fishing - did you honestly need to ask?

If you are sure you never had one, why believe a cold caller who can't even get your name right. Barclaycard must be one of the most common cards so a good percentage of people will have had one at some point - enough to make it worth their while to say that one above others.

I just hang up now, or ask them to take my number off their list as I'm not interested (not that it's done much good).

I had one the other night for a free hearing assessment as I've worked in a noisy environment, when I've actually had an office job for 18 years. When i said 'I don't think so' suddenly my exclusive hearing assessment was available to anyone in the house who might need it! Obviously I hung up. I don't like to be rude as I feel for people having to do those cold calling jobs - I would hate it!
