I don't know what to do!

Evening all! Regular visitor to the forums and thought i'd finally register and try to find a bit of help with my situation.

Basically, i have been working with my current employer (a) for around 11 years and do enjoy my work. Not really thought of leaving, however a few weeks ago i applied for a promotion and was successful! The only thing is, i have also been offered a job with an external company (b) who is prepared to pay more money and for me to continue in the position i am in now.

With company A i would take up a more senior role whereas company B i would remain as an analyst. Both are relatively the same distance from home, but there would be no travel with company B as there is with A (nowhere exotic!). Company A would give me a great CV moving forward as it will be managerial experience, but B would give me a great CV based on the new technical skills i would learn (which would come im extremely useful in my line of work for the future).

I am honestly and genuinely at a loss and have no idea what to do as both companies are fighting for me to work for them, company A going as far as creating a specific role for me based on an idea i had.

I have created a pro and cons list which reckons i should leave, and the fact company B looks alot more secure reputation wise and financially, maybe i should go?.

Any helpful advice you can give would truthfully appreciated! Thanks.

I'd go for company B as they are paying more money for the same role that you are already doing. Imagine how much more they would pay you when you go for promotion with them.

I learned the hard way that loyalty to a company can be both financially and mentally destructive.

  • what made you apply for a job with company B?

Does the promotion with Company A resolve those issues?

In a way changing companies makes you look more dynamic - you're prepared to move and actively seek change IYSWIM.
Assuming you have many career-years ahead of you this would, IMHO. be the sensible option rather than 'playing safe' - 11 years there already? That's a long time!

I'd change companies - adds interest to your CV, and if the pay is higher for the same role, you could easily progress again in a short time to a managerial position anyway.

I think - make the change. Always better to regret what you did do, than wonder about what you didn't

Company A now know you would move for the right offer .......some companies are pragmatic about this.......others never totally forgive you for wanting to jump ship and it can affect advancement.

Only you know which type of company A is.

That aside look at where you would be in five years with both companies .

Would you say company A are poor payers in your industry ......it appears they may be if they are paying management the same as analysts earn elsewhere/

  • Hi all, thanks for your input. Sorry i've not been back on for a while!!

Basically company A made another offer, increasing responsibilites a bit more but still offering less money than company B.

A few differeng reasons helped me make the choice, but after a few days waivering i finally decided to bite the bullet and go for company B, onwards and upwards etc!
