Serendipitious wrote: »Less than impressed with S today as I discovered they have increased the price of their Basics teabags by a whopping 100%. These were 20p for 40 and a great cup of tea but today they are 40p for 40. (Apologies if this has been already posted but I only found out this afternoon.)
All the extra points promotions are going to be worthless if they are doubling the price of stuff.
Might as well go back to buying branded teabags at HB. Which is what I shall tell S in a minute, when I email them.
Had a lovely day otherwise though.
Love to all xx
All they did was email back with excuses about why they had to do it.
I was suprised when the next week I went to S and they had dropped back to 15p (for 40), but then a few weeks later were back up to 20p.
This is what they said.
Thank you for your email. I am sorry you do not like our own brand Basics Fairtrade tea bags. I can appreciate your disappointment as you purchased these quite often before the changes we have made to the product.
Our buyers have now stated that from April 2014 we will be replacing our existing Fairtrade 80s tea bags with a new 40s foil 1 cup format.
We have been able to reduce the packing weight for weight by 40% and the new format offers foil protection that improves freshness. With that we now have an entry price point of only £0.20
This new blend has been specially formulated by our expert blenders so that the new round tea bags when brewed in cup produce the same excellent brews as the old square tea bags. This product, as all our own brand products, has been approved by consumer panel. We have customer tested our new basics tea against the original and customers told us it was as good as the original. The new round bags tend to brew better in cup than the old rectangle due to their shape.
The tea still comes from the original smallholder Fairtrade farmers in Malawi.
The price per kilo is not the same but at £0.20 per pouch this improved product offers excellent value for those on a budget and still holds dear to the values of Sainsbury’s own brand and Fairtrade.
I have logged the details of this on to our system for the attention of our quality managers and suppliers who will take your comments on board. We will of course continue to monitor all customer feedback we receive about this product. Please be assured we take all customer feedback seriously as this allows us to constantly improve our products and service.
I do hope this answers all your questions regarding our own brand Basics tea, however if you still have more questions on the change to the product, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0800 63 62 62.I Hate Jobsworths!!!0 -

DH has been a cleanish bill of health - after a long wait and a very thorough examination the doctor couldn't find anything, but said if there is a recurrence he is to go straight back. So fingers crossed it was just a one off.0
