I don't know how it works, but I do know that M&S have an 'intelligent labelling' system built into their tags. So it might be the case that by scanning the tag, it will tell them whether it was bought instore or online. As I say, I really don't know how it works other than it is used for stock control and tracking items through the warehouse process. Just mentioning in case it is of relevance to returning items.
